Documentation

Everything you need to get the most out of Z-Shot. Features marked Pro need a Pro license.

Install & pin

  1. Open Z-Shot in the Chrome Web Store and click Add to Chrome. It works in Chrome 106+ and other Chromium browsers (Edge, Brave, Opera, Arc).
  2. Click the puzzle icon in the toolbar and pin Z-Shot so it is always one click away.
  3. That’s it — the free plan needs no account.

Take a screenshot

Click the Z-Shot icon and choose a capture type, or use a shortcut:

  • Area — drag a rectangle (Alt + Shift + A).
  • Visible — what you see on screen (Alt + Shift + V).
  • Full Page — Z-Shot scrolls and stitches the whole page (Alt + Shift + F).
  • Element (Pro) — open More capture options, hover any part of the page and click to capture just that element.

Need to capture a menu or hover state? Set the Countdown to 3 or 5 seconds first. After each capture a small card lets you copy, save or open it in the editor.

Edit & annotate

Captures open in the editor. The main tools are in the top bar; More tools holds the rest.

  • Select (V), Arrow (A), Text (T), Redact (B) and Crop (C).
  • Rectangle (R), Circle (O), Line (L), curved arrow, Highlighter (H), Pen (P), numbered Step markers (S), speech Callouts and Spotlight (F).
  • Press Ctrl + K (Cmd + K on Mac) to search for any tool.
  • Undo with Ctrl + Z, redo with Ctrl + Shift + Z. The Layers panel lets you reorder or select annotations.
  • Paste an image with Ctrl + V to place it on the canvas.

Mockups (Pro): in the Mockup & Backdrop Studio, put the capture in a browser or device frame, choose a gradient, add 3D tilt and pick a social media size.

Hide sensitive data

  • Redact (B) — draw over anything to blur or pixelate it. For passwords, keys and personal data use a solid redaction box: blur can sometimes be reversed.
  • Auto-redaction (Pro) — finds emails, phone numbers, card numbers, API keys and IP addresses on your device. Always review what it found before sharing.

Your original capture stays in your gallery until you delete it, so delete it too if it contains secrets.

Copy text (OCR)

Pro: choose Extract text in the editor, then drag a box over the text or click once to read the whole image. You can edit the result before copying.

  • Fast mode works offline straight away (English is built in).
  • Accurate mode reads photos, tilted pages and English handwriting. It downloads a model once (about 9 MB for English), checks it and then works offline.
  • 17 languages are available, including Bengali, Hindi, Arabic, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese. Other languages download once when you first use them.
  • Images are never uploaded to read them, and redacted areas are never read.

Record your screen

  1. Open Z-Shot, switch to Screen Record (Pro) and choose microphone, webcam bubble and countdown.
  2. Click Start recording (or Alt + Shift + R) and pick a tab, a window or your whole screen.
  3. Use the on-screen control to pause, resume, finish or cancel. Keep the recorder tab open while you record.

The webcam bubble is shown on the page you are recording; it appears in the video when the recorded area includes that page.

Video Studio

Open any recording from the gallery to edit it in Video Studio:

  • Timeline: split a clip at the playhead, delete or mute a segment, undo and redo.
  • Zoom and Text tracks: add camera zooms and on-screen text.
  • Look: gradient or solid backdrops, window frames, padding, rounded corners, shadows and aspect ratios (Auto, 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:3, 4:5).
  • Speed and Sound panels, then Export as WebM or MP4 (MP4 when your browser supports it) at up to 1440p, or as a GIF.

Limits: trimming and converting work on videos up to 120 seconds, GIFs up to 6 seconds, and media files up to 256 MB.

Export & share

  • Copy (Ctrl + C) puts a PNG on your clipboard for Slack, Notion, Jira or GitHub.
  • Export (Ctrl + S) saves PNG, JPEG or WebP; Pro adds 2× and 3× size.
  • Upload & share (Pro, in the editor and Video Studio): send a capture or recording to your own storage and copy a link. Connect your S3-compatible bucket once in My Account → Storage (Cloudflare R2, AWS S3, Backblaze B2, Wasabi, DigitalOcean Spaces or MinIO); the file goes straight from your browser to the bucket. You can also send images to Imgur, or files to a Discord webhook or any HTTPS webhook.
  • Bug report (Pro): adds the page URL, browser, OS and screen size and copies it as GitHub/Markdown or Jira text.
  • Guides (Pro): turn several captures into a step-by-step guide and export Markdown or a printable HTML page (save it as PDF from the print dialog).

Every capture and recording is saved in the gallery inside your browser. Search, filter by type, group captures into projects and star favourites.

  • Backup saves everything to a JSON file; Restore loads it on another computer. A backup file can be up to 128 MB with up to 1,000 captures.
  • Deleting is permanent — there is no trash. Removing the extension or clearing site data also deletes your gallery, so back up first.

Activate Pro

  1. Buy a plan on the pricing page. Your license is linked to your ZTooly account email.
  2. In Z-Shot, open Account and sign in — Pro unlocks automatically. Or open Activate and paste your license key from My Account.
  3. Each plan covers a number of browsers. To move to a new computer, remove the old browser in My Account.

Pro keeps working offline for 24 hours after the last successful license check. Open Z-Shot while online to refresh it.

Teams

On the Team plan each seat is one person. The buyer is the team owner and uses one seat.

  1. Open My Account → Team and invite people by email. Each invite holds a seat until it is accepted or cancelled.
  2. They open the link, sign in or create an account with the invited email and press Accept. Then they sign in inside Z-Shot: Pro switches on in up to 3 browsers.
  3. In the editor, choose ⋯ → Send to team; in Video Studio, Send to team. The capture appears in the team gallery, where everyone can view and comment.
  4. The owner can add a Slack or Discord webhook link, or any https:// address, under Team settings. New shares and comments are posted there. Other addresses get JSON signed with the team secret (header X-ZTooly-Signature).

Shared files are kept in the team owner’s own S3-compatible storage, not on ztooly.com. Before anyone can share, the owner connects a bucket under My Account → Storage (Cloudflare R2, AWS S3, Backblaze B2, Wasabi, DigitalOcean Spaces or MinIO). The same storage is used for Upload & share in Z-Shot. Keep the bucket private and use a key limited to that bucket; Z-Shot tests the connection before saving and shows files through links that expire.

Removing someone, or the team plan ending, switches Pro off for members. Each member’s browsers come out of the plan’s total, so the owner’s own key keeps the rest.

Troubleshooting

Full page only captures the visible area

Chrome does not let extensions scroll its own pages (Settings, New Tab, the Chrome Web Store, other extensions). On those pages Z-Shot captures the visible area instead.

A shortcut does nothing

Another extension may use the same keys. Check chrome://extensions/shortcuts and pick a different combination.

Pro features are locked again

Go online and open Z-Shot so it can re-check your license. If it says the browser limit is reached, remove an old browser in My Account.

Upload to my storage fails

Open My Account → Storage and press Change, then Test & save: the test names the problem (wrong key, region or bucket). Make sure the key can read, write and delete in that bucket, and that you are signed in to Z-Shot with the same account.
